When God is Moving You

Last night I saw two posts on Instagram almost back-to-back which reminded me of something God spoke to me about extensively about some time ago: moving forward.

The first post was by an author and friend named Camille Joy. She shared the most beautiful post on Instagram about how God had called her family from one church to another.

"At the end of December I had to go to my leaders and tell them that I’d be leaving the ministry. As God was calling me to follow my husband’s lead as he chose a new church for our family. Well his response was one that blew me away. He blessed me and he said before you go THE LORD reminded me that I need to ordained you! He said do you see these exit signs around this building, that means you’re supposed to exit. It’s how you do it!"

I thought, "Wow. He is very secure." Growing up in Christian environments, I have heard of situations where a person moved on from one church to another and it being met with hostility, smear campaigns, bashing of the person in weird ways (passive aggressive sermon mentions), etc.

So when I read Camille's post, I was pleasently surprised and very happy for her family. I was also impressed by the leadership.

A few moments after, I saw a post by Dr. Luc Nierbergall. He posted about how to properly navigate leaving a place of worship when God is leading you to. He went into depth including wise words on leaving with honor, discerning relationships, and finding closure when needed.

What people need to realize is that God has reasons for moving people. There isn't always drama. Many times, people are just responding to nudges God is giving them. The metaphor He gave me was one of propagation- how cuttings of a plant are used to create new plants- but I'm sure He has other reasons as well.

I was dragging my feet writing this blog post today and a friend of mine said she was going through this which gave me the nudge I needed to write it.

If God is pulling you toward something new, listen to Him. What He showed me is that there are people who are afraid to being "on their own" and away from environments where they feel very comfortable. The sense of belonging is a fear of navigating new waters is causing them to feel confusion on what they should be doing next.

It's not actually confusion, it's an atmosphere of stress caused by fear and disobedience. I find when I give God my yes, He gives me the next step. Face whatever is causing you to be so scared. Identify it. Is it a fear of being talked about? Having to tell your leaders? Not knowing what's waiting for you? Being in a new city or country?

You don't need to be afraid of what people will say, who will be angry at you or sad, or know exactly what you'll do in the next place.

Jesus will be with you. And His plans are always good. This isn't about church hopping, but moving when God says to move. It's really very simple. It only becomes complicated when human emotions, egos, and fear are involved.

Resist all of those (I mean, feelings are normal, but don't let them steer the ship). God is doing amazing things in this time. No one can deny that. Revival is everywhere. If He says go, then go.

For some, He's showing me people you have built relational equity in a place and don't want to start over. You feel like you've reached a certain level in terms of status and know it won't be transferred. The thing is, I would say most of the time when God is moving people, it's not from a bad place to a better place. It could just be that He wants you to serve somewhere you'd be more of a servant and a less of a king in one's own eyes.

Or perhaps it's to lend your gifts in a place where there aren't many with your giftings. God isn't obligated to share His exact reasons with us.

He showed me that the word "loyalty" would be thrown around in some cases to get people to feel guilty or stay. Choose God's voice or anyone else's. Be loyal to Him first.

As someone who resists change, I do understand wanting to avoid conflict and loving being comfortable. There are some conversations that are very hard to have. Read Dr. Luc's post for help. Pray.

Ask God to search your heart and reveal to you if there's something you need to know or see. Be honest and tell Him you're struggling but desire to do His will. He always helps me when I tell Him that.

The few times God has moved me, I've noticed that where I was slowly stopped feeling like home. It didn't feel bad, I just felt more and more like a visitor. It wasn't easy for me as I have longed to put down roots for a long time. But God has told me that in my Father's house there is always a place for me.

And when I've listened, in hindsight, I always knew exactly why. When I look back, I'm grateful for everything I've learned along the way and how it's deepened my relationship with Him and helped my family so much. There were times when He had me move for reasons that had less to do with me and more for my family- that was hard. But in the end, I was grateful, because He saw what I couldn't.

God's plans are always good. Never to harm you. Obey Him. You don't want "failure to launch" anywhere in your file.

Below are the stories I posted in 2023 about this. Pray and seek His face about your situation. He'll answer you.

love, Bunmi

How Staying Focused Keeps You Afloat

In the last post I wrote about how in the story of Nehemiah, two men called Sanballat and Tobiah were instantly disturbed by Nehemiah's plan to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Then they laughed and accused Nehemiah of doing wrong. Nehemiah didn't fight them or go on a tirade defending himself. His answer to his newly formed panel of agitators was to state his unmoving faith in God. Even as they spread falsehoods against Nehemiah, he prevailed. How? He kept his eyes on the One who had given him his project. Focus will keep you on track and even in joy as you work. Keep reading.

Rejecting Every False Prophecy/Curse & Choosing God's Vision

When Sanballat and his buddies realized he could not attack Nehemiah's body, they tried to attack his mind with accusations. When they realized the attacks on the mind did not work, they tried to attack his spirit by having him come into physical agreement with false prophecy of imminent attack and death ("they will come and kill you").

What has been falsely prophesied over your work? That it's not a good time to start? That the economy isn't good enough? That no one will like your work? That it will fail? That you're not the one to do it? The enemy cannot physically make you stop but he will try to discourage and discredit you. Come out of agreement with any false prophetic word and come into agreement God's sight for your project. Keep reading.
